SAT PREP PROGRAM
Karen LeRoy has agreed to run an SAT prep program for us this year. It will run on Wednesdays and Sundays from Feb. 29 - April 4th. All juniors are encouraged to participate and sophomores are invited as well, since we may not be offering this program next year. Please see the attached flyer for more details.

The New Shoreham School Committee will hold a public workshop at 4:00 on Thursday, December 15 to review a proposal to alter the school schedule for the Block Island School. The proposal would add 30 minutes to the school day Monday through Thursday and dismiss school two hours earlier on Friday. Currently, student athletes can miss extensive class time competing in sports events and the schedule change is designed to recover that lost learning time. The Block Island School is surveying parents, staff, and students on the proposed change in school times. The proposal lengthens the school day Monday through Thursday and shortens Friday creating a window for athletic contests. However, the revised schedule would apply to the entire school, K-12. Following last year’s discussion and surveys, the School Committee is considering changing the format of the school calendar. Options under consideration:
1. Retaining the current format of two vacations, one in February and one in April.
2. Eliminating February and April vacations and establishing one March vacation.

As part of its review of the High School Proficiency Based Graduation policy the New Shoreham School Committee created a new level of diploma designed to recognize student excellence. The Regents Commended Diploma will be awarded to students who meet specific criteria recognizing a level of achievement that exceeds requirements and demonstrates excellence. The New Shoreham School Department provides accident insurance through ISI New England for each student enrolled at the Block Island School. You may purchase additional (24-hour) accident insurance for your child by filling out the enrollment form and mailing it with your premium payment to ISI New England. Payment options include check, money order, or credit card. Individual coverage will not go into effect until both payment and application are received by ISI; a prompt response will maximize your premium dollar. Brochures for the 24-hour accident insurance are being sent home with students. If you have any questions or need a brochure, please contact Marsha Gutierrez at 466-7732.

Parents - Point of Sale (POS) Lunch System - MyNutriKids - Starts up this Friday, January 14.
This Friday our POS lunch system goes live. Parents can set up online accounts now to pay for student lunches and see reports of what has been purchased. Letters describing the system along with student ID numbers were mailed home and should arrive early this week. The letter is linked below along with a link to the MyNutriKids web site.

While school closing and delay information is available through many media outlets, you can register for immediate mobile phone text and email notification. In an attempt to secure the school building, new electronic locks have been installed on the doors. The front door will only be open from 7:35 AM to 8:15 AM and 2:10 PM to 3:00 PM. All doors to the school will be locked throughout the rest of the day. A member of the office staff will be able to “buzz” visitors into the building.
