The New Shoreham School Department is soliciting proposals to renovate and repair the solar electric system at the Block Island School. Sealed proposals will be accepted until 2:00 p.m. on Monday, August 1, 2011, and will be publicly opened immediately thereafter. All proposals will be in force for 30 days following opening. The New Shoreham School Committee, at its meeting held on Monday, May 16, adopted the school calendar for 2011-12. The calendar is based on our current one, with February and April vacations, with a couple of changes intended to improve attendance. First, there will be no school the Wednesday before Thanksgiving since attendance is very low on that day. Please note that the Tuesday before Thanksgiving will be a full and complete day of school as moving Wednesday's early departure from the island to Tuesday would defeat the purpose of the change. Two, there will be no school the Friday before February vacation since that day as well has low attendance with many early departures. This does push to last planned day of school to Friday, June 15, so any snow days will spill over into the following week. Finally, the committee will revisit the calendar early next year since there was considerable interest in an alternative schedule.
